Both free and paid DLCs are coming to Final Fantasy 16

Whether you're a veteran or a newcomer who's just had their first taste of Chocobo, it's clear - there's more adventure on the horizon.

Square Enix has a spotty history when it comes to DLCs for mainline Final Fantasy games but Naoki Yoshida has a knack for proving doubts wrong.

In the days when Final Fantasy XVI was but a twinkle in the eyes of avid gamers, Naoki Yoshida, the project’s lead, was a little hesitant about the idea of downloadable content. He emphasized the focus on delivering a full and polished game that was worth the price of admission, commenting that he and his team wanted “players to have the satisfaction that equals what they paid for or more.” The priority was to build a complete original game, a universe expansive enough to satiate the appetites of ravenous fans. Well, that universe is getting a whole lot bigger now, and it turns out, Square Enix has been listening intently to its community.

Contrary to initial impressions, Square Enix has confirmed FF16 will indeed welcome new content. Yoshida announced a pair of two DLCs coming to FF16 in a special video message.

The announcement, dropped amid Square Enix’s “Voices from Valisthea” panel at PAX West 2023, excited fans given the latest Final Fantasy entry has become one of the standout releases of the year.

Despite launching as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, Final Fantasy 16 has sold more than 3 million copies and garnered critical acclaim, although its exclusivity has limited its potential audience compared to the likes of Final Fantasy 15.

The impetus for the expansion comes primarily from the community’s yearning to delve deeper into the intricate world of Valisthea and learn more about its inhabitants. It’s not simply a calculated move to rake in more cash from an already successful title. The team has been poring over feedback, and the community’s voice resounded clearly – they want more of Valisthea. And Square Enix is happy to oblige.

While it’s still ambiguous whether these new chapters in the Final Fantasy XVI saga will come with a price tag, the use of the term DLC instead of a mere “update” suggests that the content will be substantive and likely not free. However, it’s not all about swiping the credit card; there’s something for those of us who’ve been thrifty with our Gil. A free update is already live, signaling Square Enix’s commitment to continually enhancing the gaming experience.

It’s unclear if this new update is the latest of the free content that’s coming to Final Fantasy 16.

The update is more than a cursory nod to user feedback. It’s a multi-faceted package that includes significant quality-of-life improvements. A standout feature allows players to change the appearance of Clive’s weapon while retaining its attributes. In simpler terms, you can make your weapon look cool without compromising on the stats. It’s these little things, really, that make a difference – a dash of personalization here, an alternate outfit for characters there.

Oh yes, speaking of attire, Clive isn’t the only one getting a wardrobe refresh. Jill, Torgal, Ambrosia, and Joshua are also receiving new threads. As for controllers, gamers will find layouts have been adjusted, enhancing accessibility and playability based on player feedback.

And just when you thought the news couldn’t get more tantalizing, Yoshida threw in another revelation. Final Fantasy 16 is shedding its PlayStation 5 exclusivity cloak and embracing the broader world of PC gaming.

What are the chances that one of the DLC for Final Fantasy 16 will revolve around Cid?

Development for a PC version is in the works, answering the call of disappointing Final Fantasy fans barred from playing their favourite game all because they prefer to play on he PC.

While the timeline for this new frontier and the impending DLCs remains nebulous, Yoshida assures more information will be unveiled “before the end of the year.”

So, what’s the key takeaway here? Square Enix is not merely riding the wave of Final Fantasy XVI’s initial success; it’s building upon it. It’s a balancing act of delivering on current promises and teasing the uncharted waters of Valisthea’s future.
