We've known for a while now that Warzone's Verdansk map will be featured in some form in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The extended gameplay trailer revealed at Gamescom 2023 just confirmed that players are indeed returning to a part of the battle royale map.
At Gamescom Opening Night, Activision Blizzard showcased the first cinematic gameplay trailer for the upcoming sequel to last year's Modern Warfare 2. The teaser unveils the first mission called "Operation 627" which sees Taskforce 141 execute an amphibious raid of "The Gulag." Warzone fans will instantly recognize the location as part of the Verdansk map.
The gameplay trailer sees the elite military team exit a submarine and scale up the wall of the seaside prison. The team makes their way to the underground complex to rescue someone from within the Gulag.
Operation 627" is seemingly a nod to an older Call of Duty mission of the same name from 2009's Modern Warfare 2. During the mission, the player is sent to rescue an individual from a Russian prison, which turns out to be Captain Price. The showers featured in the Gulag from Warzone were heavily inspired by the Modern Warfare 2 mission.
It seems that Price will again be captured by again in Modern Warfare 3. He is not part of the trailer but it would be easy to assume that he is the one being held captive. Activision also revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will feature open-combat missions which is a new addition to the series.
