A new PS5 variant features a smaller APU

The removal of the active cooling solution suggests that the new APU will consume less energy. The new model will also have a smaller die size and may have faster computing power. Project Trinity may be the long-rumored PS5 Slim because of the absence of the liquid metal cooling solution which takes up a lot of real estate within the console.

The rumored specs are well within reason and but haven’t been officially confirmed. However, Microsoft seems convinced that anew PS5 Slim is being developed. The tech giant shared documents during the FTC lawsuit hearing alluding to a new variant of Sony’s current-gen console.

However, Sony may opt to just release the new variant as a new PS5 without the Slim or Pro label. If Sony opts not to add a model variant, the upgraded console may be the base for a Slim or Pro model down the line.

There is speculation that the recent price cut for the PS5 is a strong indicator that Sony is paving the way for newer variant to hit store shelves soon. Discounts are already available in certain regions and may arrive in the US soon.

Sony hasn’t confirmed or denied the rumors at this point. The company is gearing up for the release of Project Q later this year. The PS5 handheld companion allows players to stream games from consoles to the device.
