Most gamers leave their consoles on standby mode rather than switching them off. But, as it turns out, this prevalent practice is costing Xbox Series X owners much more than those who have a PlayStation 5 or a Nintendo Switch.
According to estimates, the Xbox Series X consumes up to £59 (USD$68) worth of energy annually. To make matters worse, leaving the Xbox Series X on standby without turning on the energy saver mode would more than double that cost to £132 (USD$152) a year. In comparison, the PS5 costs £4 (USD$4.60) a year to run on standby. As for the Nintendo Switch, the difference cost between using it docked and leaving it on standby barely makes a difference.
It's believed that more than a million people in the United Kingdom bought an Xbox Series X that doesn't have the energy saver mode turned on by default. This applies if you bought your Xbox Series X before May. Thankfully, you can toggle this mode by selecting "Energy Saver Mode" on the "Settings" page of your Xbox Series X. This way, your console will use the less costly mode by default and save a bit of cash.
Speaking of, experts are advising everyone to unplug their TV sets when they're not in use. Most modern TVs do not have an off button and usually go on standby. Doing this will save you £11 (USD$13) a year.
