Third-generation WWE superstar and the top contender for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, Cody Rhodes, was recently teased as the cover athlete for the upcoming WWE 2K24 video game.
If true, Rhodes’ status as the cover star for WWE 2K24 further cements his stature as WWE’s top face despite recent doubts following the wrestling promotion’s decision to throw him from one storyline to another while waiting for his nth shot at the title against Roman Reigns.
As was the case with WWE 2K22 and WWE 2K23, Rhodes’ image will likely be plastered on all three editions of the game: Icon, Deluxe, and Standard. However, with only the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship as his title belt in his return to the WWE, it’ll be interesting to see which WWE title belt, if any, Rhodes will hold for the Icon Edition.
It’s unclear if WWE 2K24 will still see a Cross-Gen Edition allowing access on both last-gen and current-gen consoles.
In the past two entries, the cover stars have been the subject of the popular 2K Showcase mode where players get to step into the shoes of several of the featured wrestler’s most iconic matches. Last year had a unique twist that saw players take control of Cena’s greatest opponents.
Given that Rhodes’ most recent tenure in the WWE has been relatively short and his overall wrestling career has seen him initially make more of a mark outside of the WWE – Rhodes helped star All Elite Wrestling and he’s been a part of every major wrestling promotion’s biggest event, including WWE’s WrestleMania, NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom, Impact Wrestling’s Bound for Glory, ROH’s Final Battle, and AEW’s All Out. Thus, it’ll be interesting to see if WWE 2K24 will feature a different superstar’s career for its 2K Showcase mode.
Perhaps, WWE and 2K Sports will pay tribute to fan-favorite WWE superstar, Windham Lawrence Rotunda, otherwise known as Bray Wyatt, who tragically passed away last year.
After taking a brief hiatus following the disastrous launch of WWE 2K20, 2K Sports changed the game’s release date to March from March. Thus, it’s highly likely that WWE 2K24 will get an official reveal soon ahead of its release this March, presumably a few weeks ahead of WrestleMania 40.
Aside from Cena’s 2K Showcase mode and the introduction of the WarGames, WWE 2K24 is expected to bring mproved features of MyGM, MyFACTION, MyRise, and Universe modes, as well as the Creation Suite. It’s unclear what else WWE 2K24 will introduce.
Rhodes is currently expected to wrestle against Roman Reigns as the main event of Day 2 of WrestleMania 40 for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Unfortunately, The Rock’s long-rumored return threatens to put a monkey wrench into these plans.
