The long wait is over, The Last of Us is returning to Max

Season 2 is expected to delve into the events of The Last of Us: Part II, the controversial sequel to the original game on which the series is based. This indicates that new characters integral to the game's storyline, such as Abby, will finally be introduced. The anticipation surrounding the casting for these new roles has led to plenty of speculations as fans await an official announcement. This new season promises to expand the narrative and explore deeper themes, much like the game did. Craig Mazin has previously hinted that the adaptation might span multiple seasons. This approach suggests a commitment to thoroughly exploring the follow-up's complex story and characters over an extended period, instead of rushing through its rich narrative content. It's a strategy that could potentially extend the series' lifespan while keeping audiences engaged with its evolving story.

Bella Ramsey, who has brilliantly portrayed Ellie, expressed her excitement and admittedly apprehension about living up to the high standards set by the first season. However, she probably won't be alone in navigating this. Given the fact that HBO has basically greenlighted The Last of Us until Season 4 (it's not official, but they've been heavily hinting at it), Ramsey will still have Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, around for at least all of Season 2 and, possibly, parts of Season 3.

Unfortunately, while Pascal's star power guarantees that people will tune in to The Last of Us Season 2, his popularity is also the reason why the production keeps on getting delayed.

With that said, the official confirmation of The Last of Us Season 2's release date came via the platform's annual trailer, The One to Watch. This highlights upcoming shows for the next two years, which includes The Last of Us Season 2.

While two years is a long time to wait for the next season, Naughty Dog is tiding over millions of expecting fans with The Last of Us Part 2's re-release on PlayStation 5 in January 2024. Not content with merely "upgrading" the award-winning sequel for Sony's flagship console, Naughty Dog has added new modes and content to further expand the game's universe.
