Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s ending leaves plenty of questions unanswered about the future of the characters, whether it’s the protagonists and the ones close to them or the villains out for revenge. However, there’s a lot of material for us to speculate on from what we see in the game’s climax, ending, and the unusually long post-credits sequence. While Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 isn’t confirmed yet, we do have hints of what’s coming in the threequel.
By the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the clearly telegraphed downward spiral of Norman Osborn from the charismatic billionaire-businessman-politician to soon-to-be Green Goblin is close to reaching its conclusion. With Harry Osborn in a coma, the Venom Symbiote now gone, and the Carnage Symbiote off to god knows where, the game’s ending sees the lovely couple, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, try to focus on themselves instead for once. This decision leaves his protege, Miles Morales, as the only Spider-Man of New York City in the meantime, a responsibility which he is happy to take.
However, that’s not all of it: in one of the post-credits scenes, we see Norman Osborn paying Doctor Octavius a visit in the RAFT, a maximum security underwater prison designed specifically to hold enhanced individuals captive. Osborn’s former partner mocks him for experiencing loss as Octavius teases the “final chapter,” hinting at Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. Then, for the other post-credits scene, we’re introduced to the man Rio Morales is dating, Albert Moon, and his daughter, Cindy Moon.
Unlike Marvel’s Spider-Man, which left us with possibly only one way to go with Harry Osborn being Venom – you can play as Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, in case you’re wondering – and Miles Morales becoming Spider-Man, the conclusion to the sequel teases a web of possibilities.
For starters, Doc Ock will inevitably return. It doesn’t seem like his neurological condition has gotten better, nor has his thirst for vengeance. Doc likely still wants to take down Peter, which is why he refused to answer Osborn’s query about the identity of the masked vigilantes. After sitting out the spin-off and the follow-up, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 will likely see the return of the iconic Spider-Man villain.
As for Miles Morales, something tells us that Insomniac Games has something in store for the Ultimate Spider-Man in a form of a DLC. In the comic books, Cindy Moon becomes Silk, one of the many Spider-Totemic Avatars that have been introduced in the many years since Spider-Man became popular. Similar to what Insomniac did with Harry Osborn becoming Venom, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 or an upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 spin-off could switch things up and have Cindy become Silk through a different means.
Of course, we’re pretty sure fans wouldn’t mind if Insomniac went ahead and dabbled with the Spider-Man multiverse. After the success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Neith knows just how much demand there is for Spider-Man.
Moving on, Norman Osborn, after seeing Spider-Man basically take his son away from him and his specific mention of the “G-Serum”, might be getting to the point that he finally becomes the Green Goblin.
Finally, with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 teasing Cletus Kasady, Carnage could join the party in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 or in a future spin-off or maybe even both. Who knows? Carnage could prove too formidable for Miles Morales to handle even with the help of Peter Parker. Instead of bonding with his iconic host, Carnage could join forces with Norman Osborn instead, becoming the Red Goblin. This might be where Venom comes in to help.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 proved that you can never have too many villains in a single game. Every single one, from The Lizard to Kraven the Hunter, Venom, and Mister Negative, all got their time in the spotlight.
With likely at least one spin-off and a full game in Marvel’s Wolverine separating Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, Insomniac Games has a lot of time to cook something that will blow our minds.
For now though, fans will have to be content with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is getting a new game mode, among others, before the year ends. The PS5 Slim is initially launching on November 8 with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 bundled as well.
