Vampire Survivors win big at the BAFTA Game Awards 2023

Vampire Survivors was the biggest winner of the night over last year's GOTY winner, Elden Ring, and the runner-up, God of War: Ragnarok.

Vampire Survivors might be the best game to come out in recent memory that you've never heard about.

This just in: there’s a better game than Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarok.

In what was easily the most surprising turnout at the BAFTA Game Awards, Vampire Survivors walked away with the “Best Game” award over both Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarok. In addition to this, Vampire Survivors also took home the “Game Design” award, beating out Cult of the Lamb and Horizon Forbidden West.

If it’s any consolation, God of War: Ragnarok still went home with the most awards with six, while Elden Ring had two.

Here’s the full list of all the winners at the BAFTA Game Awards:

  • Best Game: Vampire Survivors
  • British Game: Rollerdrome
  • Debut Game: Tunic
  • Family: Kirby And The Forgotten Land
  • Multiplayer: Elden Ring
  • Evolving Game: Final Fantasy 14 Online
  • Animation: God Of War: Ragnarok
  • Artistic Achievement: Tunic
  • Audio Achievement: God Of War: Ragnarok
  • Game Beyond Entertainment: Endling – Extinction Is Forever
  • Game Design: Vampire Survivors
  • Music: God Of War: Ragnarok
  • Narrative: Immortality
  • Original Property: Elden Ring
  • Lead Performer: Christopher Judge (Papa Kratos in GOWR)
  • Supporting Performer: Laya Deleon Hayes (Angrboda in GOWR)
  • Technical Achievement: Horizon: Forbidden West
  • EE Game Of The Year: God Of War: Ragnarok
It’s surprising to see Elden Ring go home with fewer awards than expected.

It’s excellent to see awarding shows shine the spotlight on games with significantly lesser marketing budgets. This isn’t to say that God of War: Ragnarok and Elden Ring are only good because they’re popular, but it isn’t a secret that a handful of equally compelling games fly under the radar because they don’t get enough marketing.

Given the reaction on the faces of the Vampire Survivors development team, Poncle, they’re just as surprised as the rest of the gaming industry of the win.

Regardless of the win, Elden Ring remains the most GOTY’ed game of all time, beating out The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Last of Us Part II. Elden Ring’s first premium expansion is coming out later this year.

On the other hand, God of War: Ragnarok isn’t getting an expansion at all. However, Tyr’s voice actor is hinting at a future God of War project featuring the Norse God of War that may or may not be the live-action adaptation by Amazon.
