Turning Roblox into a dating app feels wrong

Roblox announces plans for dating experiences for older users amidst concerns about platform safety against grooming and exploitation.

It definitely appears that Roblox's decision to go public recently was just the start.

In the recent Roblox Developers Conference, Roblox revealed plans that are taking the virtual platform in a groundbreaking direction, as per The Verge

David Baszucki, the CEO of Roblox, expressed the company’s aspiration to evolve its rapidly growing platform to include dating experiences for users above the age of 17. This bold prediction comes alongside the understanding that the age group 17-24 is the fastest expanding demographic on the platform. But with this ambitious pursuit come numerous concerns, given Roblox’s history and its primary association with a younger audience.

Baszucki’s vision is undoubtedly lofty, describing a future where “thousands of adults will meet for the first time” using Roblox as a bridge to form what Baszucki describes as “real-life relationships.

Roblox’s growth mirrors that of Fortnite except that Epic Games’ battle royale isn’t trying to market itself as a dating app. At least, not yet.

While this could be perceived as a romanticized notion of bringing people together in the digital age, it isn’t without its challenges. Introducing dating elements to a platform historically oriented towards younger users could face criticism, especially when safety and potential misuse come into play.

Safety on the platform is a prevalent concern. Roblox, in recent times, has been scrutinized for instances of grooming as well as other unsafe interactions, a reality that’s starkly at odds with the new dating initiative. The highly publicized case of a 33-year-old man being arrested for assaulting a minor he met on Roblox remains fresh in public memory.

Despite Roblox’s defense that its chat features were “incredibly limited” and “heavily filtered,” many skeptics insist that the platform is incapable of guaranteeing user safety. The inclusion of 17-year-olds in this dating initiative further complicates matters, as this age is typically below the standard cut-off for most online dating platforms.

Keep in mind that Roblox is already struggling to filter younger audiences against using the Voice Chat. If the company can’t even handle this problem right now, what more when malicious individuals have even more of a reason to flock what’s considered to be a congregation of prime targets for them?

To combat this, the company states that it plans to deploy enhanced security measures and age verification processes. A legal ID submission alongside a selfie is purported to be part of this verification process. But critics argue that while this might deter younger users from accessing the dating features, it might not safeguard against predatory behaviors from adults on the platform.

Don’t forget that 17 is still a relatively young age. In all 28 states and at least 8 union territories, anyone below the age of 18 is still considered a minor. So, even if teenagers and younger children might not be as exposed to predator behavior, what of the young adults?

How can Roblox guarantee the safety of those who are technically allowed to access the dating features?

While these are concerns that every dating platform has to consider and think about, Roblox is opening itself to worse problems with its future plans. After all, it’s not just a dating platform.

Roblox’s popularity will only continue to grow, the only question is, will this be good for the platform?

Although the dating initiative has its detractors, Roblox’s growth and diversification goals are evident. They plan to add AI tools to create more realistic avatars and launch a video chat feature, Roblox Connect. Furthermore, other objectives were outlined for the platform, including the possibility of creators selling physical merchandise and a universal civility metric’s introduction. Reflecting on past achievements, Baszucki mentioned that Roblox had achieved 58 percent of its goals from five years ago.

With lofty aims such as having a Roblox developer earn over $50 million every year and establishment of a 100-person company developing on Roblox, the company seems determined in its trajectory.

Ultimately, the public response to Roblox remains mixed. While some see it as a logical evolution for a platform seeking to capture a broader audience, others believe Roblox is drifting from its original purpose. The perception is that Roblox could potentially become a hub for unsavory individuals.

It remains to be seen if Roblox’s venture into the world of virtual dating will be its heroic evolution or a chapter in its potential downfall.

Roblox’s unprecedented growth in recent years may become its downfall if it doesn’t keep it under control.

Roblox only recently started catering to audiences 17 years old and above. The popular online gaming platform is now scheduled for its PlayStation launch in October.
