Despite the frequent rumors about him already resigning for three more projects, Tom Holland’s status as Spider-Man is still unclear. After many months of speculation, the actor finally updated fans about the upcoming movie.
During a press conference with the Critics Choice Association, the actor shared the conditions for his return in Spider-Man 4. The movie has been rumored to be in development for a while now but Marvel hasn’t officially placed the movie in its release schedule.
“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” Holland shared. “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing. I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy.”
Holland’s sentiments are understandable as Spider-Man: No Way Home was a record-breaking movie and would have been the perfect ending to the trilogy. The actor just wants to protect his and Spider-Man’s legacy by not rushing into a fourth movie. We have learned from Thor: Love and Thunder that a fourth movie isn’t a sure-fire hit with audiences.
No Way Home did end on a cliffhanger and left Peter Parker’s fate ambiguous. The way the film ended leaves the door very much open for Holland and company to return. However, Holland is focused on returning for a story that adds value to the character’s journey and builds on the previous trilogy.
He adds, “So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”
The actor did share his fondness for playing Peter Parker in the MCU and he enjoys working with the cast and crew. He’s willing to return as the web-slinger as long as there is a compelling story to tell.
“But that said, if we can figure that out, I would be a fool not to put the suit back on again because I owe everything to Spider-Man,” Holland explained. “I love the character and the people I get to work with. So, I would love to tell another story, but I’ll only tell it if we can find the right one.”
While Marvel has not officially disclosed plans for Spider-Man 4, rumors suggest that the movie is being fast-tracked. The post-credits scene of No Way Home hints at a potential crossover with Tom Hardy’s Venom, generating excitement among fans. As the MCU continues in the Multiverse Saga, the possibility of more crossovers and another appearance by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire adds to the anticipation surrounding Spider-Man’s future adventures.
