Todd Howard wants Elder Scrolls 6 to be the "ultimate fantasy world simulator"

Howard has hinted that the upcoming project already has a codename. However, he wouldn't reveal what the game is called internally during its development. Howard is still hesitant to reveal details about the upcoming title but did eventually reveal something about Elder Scrolls 6.

"It's like… I don't want to answer, but I want to be polite," Howard shared. "I will say that we want it to fill that role of the ultimate fantasy-world simulator. And there are different ways to accomplish that given the time that has passed."

Howard may be hesitant to reveal information about Elder Scrolls 6 as the game is really in its production cycle. Given Bethesda's development cycle, the game is likely several years away. Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed during the FTC v. Microsoft trial that the Skyrim sequel is at least five years away.

Bethesda has focused the majority of its efforts on the release of Starfield, the studio's first new IP in over two decades. The team reportedly plans to support the title for a few years until most of the issues have been ironed out. During this time, most of the devs will transition to Elder Scrolls 6.

Howard also talked about retiring from making games. He hopes to enjoy a long and storied career, looking to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto's tenure at Nintendo.

"It's weird for me," Howard said when asked about retirement, "but that's a long, long way off. I want to do it forever. I think the way I work will probably evolve, but… look at [71-year-old Mario creator and Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto]. He's still doing it"
