Final Fantasy XIV is easily Square Enix’s most profitable game in the famed series. This massive success is all thanks to its constant innovation. Now, the studio is open to expanding the reach of the game further with an animated TV series.
During the Q&A at the recent FFXIV Fan Festival 2023 event held in Las Vegas, game director and producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida was asked about the possibility of having a Final Fantasy XIV anime, movie, or TV series.
Yoshida said that he’s open to the idea if the project is done right, saying, “So if I’m allowed to be the overall productions, as well as overall supervisory director, then I would love to have a Final Fantasy 14 TV series,” Yoshi-P shared. “That said, right now, as you know, my title is Producer/Director of Final Fantasy 14. I’m the head of Creative Business Unit 3. I’m also a board member. And so I don’t think I can squeeze in being a director of a TV series.”
While Yoshida may not have time to lead the project personally, the team is still open to the idea of making a TV series for the MMORPG. Final Fantasy XIV would be heavily involved in the development of the TV show to ensure that it isn’t “destroying the image” of the popular game.
“But in any case, if the [Final Fantasy 14] team becomes committed to a project like that, we want to make sure that we’re not destroying the image that we have built, or the players have built in their mind of what Final Fantasy 14 should be, no matter what the medium would be,” Yoshi-P said. “So we know that we want to have a very good quality when we deliver it. I mean, we don’t have any real plans of doing so. But yeah, I would love to Yeah, I will make sure that the quality is definitely high.”
Square Enix revealed the latest expansion Dawntrail during the FFXIV Fan Festival 2023. The latest expansion is coming next summer and will conclude the Hydaelyn–Zodiark arc.
Yoshi-P likened Dawntrail to the latest season of a TV show. The director said that “people may want to jump into the latest season.” The devs of Final Fantasy XIV have reportedly “made the earliest seasons easy to get into.”
Yoshida also said that Final Fantasy XIV is “very story-driven” and promised that the studio will “continue to update it and expand our content.”
Final Fantasy XIV is available for PC, PS4, PS5, and macOS, and is coming to Xbox Series X/S in Q2 2024. In the meantime, you’re free to try it out until Stormblood.
