Splatter films have been around for a long time, yet none have quite soared to the heights of mainstream recognition as the Saw franchise. Fans of the series who’ve been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the next chapter, Saw X, are in for a treat with the latest poster that Lionsgate has revealed.
In a minimalist design, the poster showcases an eye, a heart, and a rugged-looking hacksaw. Puzzle enthusiasts will promptly discern that this artwork is in fact a Rebus, which, once deciphered, forms the phrase “I heart (love) saw”.
Going deeper, the poster also carries a double meaning by honoring the first film of the series, where hacksaws were deftly used to mislead the plot. Adding another layer, Saw X will be a return to form, taking place between the events of Saw and Saw II and signifying a return to the basic survival elements of the franchise.
Here is a synopsis of the film:
Set between the events of Saw and Saw II, a sick and desperate John Kramer travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer — only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through devious, deranged and ingenious traps.
Saw X marks the tenth installment within the series, promising the anticipated return of Tobin Bell’s iconic character, John “Jigsaw” Kramer, and fresh faces including Shawnee Smith, Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, and Michael Beach.
Kevin Greutert, who directed Saw VI and Saw 3D, will return to helm the film, while Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger will also return to pen the script, having drafted the script for the last two Saw films. Hopefully this reunion of Saw veterans will result in a better film than some of the other sequels.
Despite a number of lackluster installments within the series, the Saw films have successfully accrued more than $1 billion in box office revenue. This impressive achievement places the franchise as the fifth highest grossing horror franchise in history, trailing only behind renowned franchises such as The Conjuring, Alien, Resident Evil, and It.
Saw X will premiere in theaters worldwide on September 29.
