The Last of Us Part 2 is receiving a PS5 remaster, elevating one of the top titles on the PlayStation 4 to the graphical and performance standards of the next-generation. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is scheduled for release on January 19. As expected, its new price point is drawing controversy. After all, how can Sony justify re-releasing a title that just came out in 2020 and sell it for $49 as if it's a new game? While this remains a contentious topic, the entire truth is that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered doesn't have to cost as much for a select few.
For those who already own the original version of the award-winning narrative-driven title on PlayStation 4, there's an existing upgrade pathway, regardless of whether you own a physical or digital copy of the game.
For a one-time fee, players who already own The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4 can upgrade to the PS5-enhanced version.
Owners of The Last of Us Part 2 on PlayStation 4 can upgrade to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PlayStation 5 for a small fee of $10 (£10 in the U.K.). This upgrade charge mirrors the one seen with the PS5 launch of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection in early 2022, another remaster from Naughty Dog.
For those who don't yet own The Last of Us Part 2, the remastered edition is already available for pre-order ahead of its release. An alternative, more economical approach would be to purchase The Last of Us Part 2 on sale for a lower price and then pay the separate upgrade fee. Do note that the $10 upgrade path currently isn't available. You'll have to wait for when the game goes live to upgrade to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for $10.
