The Last of Us Part 2 is receiving a PS5 remaster, elevating one of the top titles on the PlayStation 4 to the graphical and performance standards of the next-generation. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is scheduled for release on January 19. As expected, its new price point is drawing controversy. After all, how can Sony justify re-releasing a title that just came out in 2020 and sell it for $49 as if it’s a new game? While this remains a contentious topic, the entire truth is that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered doesn’t have to cost as much for a select few.
For those who already own the original version of the award-winning narrative-driven title on PlayStation 4, there’s an existing upgrade pathway, regardless of whether you own a physical or digital copy of the game.
For a one-time fee, players who already own The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4 can upgrade to the PS5-enhanced version.
Owners of The Last of Us Part 2 on PlayStation 4 can upgrade to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PlayStation 5 for a small fee of $10 (£10 in the U.K.). This upgrade charge mirrors the one seen with the PS5 launch of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection in early 2022, another remaster from Naughty Dog.
For those who don’t yet own The Last of Us Part 2, the remastered edition is already available for pre-order ahead of its release. An alternative, more economical approach would be to purchase The Last of Us Part 2 on sale for a lower price and then pay the separate upgrade fee. Do note that the $10 upgrade path currently isn’t available. You’ll have to wait for when the game goes live to upgrade to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for $10.
The process for upgrading to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PS5 is straightforward. Digital owners need to head on over to the official PlayStation Store page for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered from their PS5 console on January 19. If the upgrade option isn’t immediately visible, clicking on the ellipsis (…) should provide access to the upgrade. All disc owners will follow a similar process but must keep the PS4 disc inserted into the PS5 console. It’s important to note that owners of the PS4 disc must insert it into their PS5 every time they wish to download or play the PS5 digital versions, meaning that purchasing the upgrade and then passing on the PS4 disc to someone else isn’t an option – an entirely different topic for another day.

As the release of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered draws near, the early reviews are already praising the game, similar to how the original PS4 version received critical acclaim upon its 2020 release. The new No Return mode, in particular, is a highlight well worth the price of admission. Furthermore, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered isn’t just for the returning players – it’s also for newcomers who might be curious to know more about HBO’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the game, which is expected to start filming soon.
For returning players, the $10 upgrade fee is a worthwhile investment, while the full $49 price tag is justified for a game of this caliber, especially for new players. Simply put, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is poised to be one of the best PS5 games available.
