While the strikes by writers and actors have finally concluded, the repercussions are expected to resonate through Hollywood for several years. Despite these setbacks, Superman: Legacy retains to its original release schedule, providing a welcome relief for fans eagerly anticipating the superhero’s latest reboot.
James Gunn confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, that the first DC Universe movie is still on track. The co-CEO of DC Studios thanked the production team working on Superman: Legacy for keeping the ship upright despite the chaos that has engulfed Hollywood for several months.
Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I’ve seen in my entire career, Superman: Legacy will be making the originally planned release date of July 11, 2025,” Gunn tweeted.

While Superman: Legacy is still two years away, it will be a welcome development for fans of comic book movies. Gunn buttoned up the script for Superman: Legacy before the writers’ strike started and found actors for the upcoming film. He will be serving as both writer and director for the Superman reboot.
DC Studios announced the casting of Clark Kent and Lois Lane for the upcoming reboot just weeks before the actors’ strike started. David Corenswet will be replacing Henry Cavill as the new Man of Steel while Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois.
The duo will be working alongside Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. The casting of so many superheroes in the film lays the groundwork for future DC Studios projects including possible standalone films for Hawkgirl and Green Lantern.
Many other upcoming projects, especially from rival Marvel Studios, have been negatively impacted by the twin work stoppage. It will be a lean year for both movie studios as only Deadpool 3 and Joker: Folie à Deux are scheduled to release in 2024 for Marvel and DC respectively.
Superman: Legacy marks the beginning of a new era for the DC movie franchise after the current DC Extended Universe ends with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran unveiled their visions for a new DC Universe early in 2023 with projects like Superman: Legacy, Batman’s The Brave and the Bold, The Authority, Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing.
We will be keeping a close eye on the start of filming for Superman: Legacy as it will be DC’s first full-blown movie project with Gunn and Safran at the helm of the studio. Gunn previously worked on The Suicide Squad and its spin-off TV series Peacemaker for DC.
Superman: Legacy is coming to theaters on July, 11, 2025.
