The Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters update the original Final Fantasy games (1 through 6) and give them cleaner, crisper-in-game sprites. In addition to this, the remaster games overhaul the UI and balance the gameplay as well. After being released on the PC as well as iOS and Android platforms last year, Square Enix confirmed their arrival on the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch for next year as part of the franchise’s 35th-anniversary celebration. But, while this is good news, a handful of fans are complaining that they can no longer get their hands on physical copies of the game anymore.
In a world full of digital-only releases, Square Enix decided to go old school and released a standard physical edition of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters and an Anniversary Edition. If bought directly from Square Enix’s store, these games will set you back $74.99 and $259.99, respectively. Unfortunately, both are sold out although you can try your luck on the waitlist.

Naturally, fans are complaining about why Square Enix didn’t make enough physical copies of some of the most popular Final Fantasy games in history.
If it’s any consolation, the games aren’t coming to the PS4 and the Switch until June of next year. This means that you’ve still got six months to chance a copy of the standard edition or the collector’s bundle. Square Enix still has enough time to manufacture a lot more physical copies of the game even if there’s still no guarantee you’ll get one even if you sign up for the waitlist. Most likely, your best chance is to get one from a scalper, but expect to pay a premium.
The silver lining here is this just proves that Square Enix was in the right to pivot toward the global market and focus more on its JRPGs.
Speaking of Square Enix, fans can look forward to playing Forspoken on January 24. A free demo of the game is currently available on the PS5.
