Crisis Core: Final Fantasy was first released in 2007 for the PlayStation Portable. The game served as a prequel to the events of Final Fantasy 7 and added more depth to the story of Cloud Strife and Sephiroth. Crisis Core was well received by both players and critics and was commercially successful, selling over 2 million copies since its debut.

When Square Enix announced a remake for Final Fantasy VII, it was only a matter of time before Crisis Core was also remastered for newer audiences to enjoy. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion was announced in June 2022 to celebrate Final Fantasy VII's 25th anniversary.

Square Enix has released the launch trailer for Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion two weeks ahead of launch. The trailer is spoiler-heavy, so players who want to jump into the game blind should avoid it at all costs.

The studio has said that the new game is more than just a remaster of the PSP version and will add a lot of improvements to the original. The new trailer shows off some of these improvements mainly to the graphics and gameplay.
