Physical editions of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in Japan and Asia have a peculiar problem: the discs are mislabeled. This error, caused apparently by a manufacturing defect over at Sony Interactive Entertainment, could lead to confusion for players attempting to install and play the highly anticipated sequel.
Normally, players would insert the “Data Disc” first to install FF7 Rebirth on PS5. Then, they would swap to the “Play Disc” to begin their adventure. However, due to the mislabeling, these labels are reversed on affected discs.
Square Enix has since acknowledged the error, issuing a guide to help affected players:

- Insert the disc labeled “Play Disc” (it’s actually the Data Disc) into your PlayStation 5 and begin the installation process.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Once the installation is complete, insert the disc labeled “Data Disc” (it’s actually the Play Disc) to start the game.
- After the initial installation, you’ll only need to use the disc labeled “Data Disc” (the actual Play Disc) to play the game.
FF7 Rebirth‘s publisher has since apologized for the inconvenience. However, it clarifies that the disc contents are correct. Players simply need to use them in the reverse order of their labels.
While this situation is not ideal, it does not affect the game’s functionality. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has received positive reviews, with critics praising its open world, engaging gameplay, and emotional narrative. But you may notice those who bought digital copies of FF7 Rebirth gloating that they don’t have to deal with this problem because, you know, there are no discs for you to swap.
As for the potential impact on Western releases, Square Enix hasn’t confirmed if similar errors exist in those regions.
This is just the latest “controversy” Square Enix finds itself in as it launches its first AAA release of the year. Previously, the company found itself in hot water for making subtle changes to Final Fantasy 7 Remake in a last-minute patch, which included altering the game’s ending.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth kicks off Square Enix’s massive slate of Final Fantasy projects for the year. Up next on the docket is a new expansion for Final Fantasy 14 followed by the second and final DLC for Final Fantasy 16. Fans can look forward to the PC port for Final Fantasy 16 before the year ends as well.
