The good news is that the PS5 Slim finally has a different color way. Unfortunately, Sony still isn't interested in creating and selling custom-themed "Special Edition" PS5 consoles, instead, still opting for redesigned interchangeable face plates.
The recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show 2024 brought exciting news for PlayStation fans with Sony revealing a more stylish iteration of the PlayStation 5 Slim. This new model stands out not only for its sleek design but also for its introduction of customizable side plates, available in multiple colors.
The PS5 Slim, which has been available for a few months, is now set to receive new side plates in three different colors: blue, silver, and red. These plates are a departure from the standard white PS5 slim, featuring a uniform matte texture as opposed to the original's glossy/matte split. This design choice is particularly appealing to those who prefer a more understated look, and the matte finish is also practical, helping to reduce visible fingerprints and smudges.
Sony's decision to introduce these new colors, including the eye-catching red which is a brighter shade than the original PS5's "cosmic red" accessories, reflects an understanding of consumer desire for personalization in gaming hardware. In particular, the silver plates are designed to evoke nostalgia for the classic design of the original PlayStation console. It's not quite like the custom-themed PS5 that the outgoing SIE CEO, Jim Ryan, received ahead of his retirement, but it's an excellent consolation prize. Finally, Sony plans to release black side plates in the future, further expanding the customization options.
