Sony just showed off more stylish and colorful PS5 Slims at CES 2024

The PS5 Slim, much like the model that it's replacing, continues to be available in two different models: one with a disc drive and a digital-only version. It comes with a detachable drive, which can be added to the digital model, simplifying the manufacturing process and potentially reducing costs. This flexibility in design is a smart move by Sony, as it caters to different user preferences and buying behaviors.

With over 50 million PS5 units sold worldwide since its launch, the introduction of these new side plates could provide a fresh incentive for new buyers or existing owners looking for a change. The plates are expected to be priced at $54.99 and will be available for purchase in the near future.

The new customization options for the PS5 Slim demonstrate Sony's ongoing efforts to keep their consoles appealing and relevant in a highly competitive market. By offering gamers the ability to personalize their consoles, Sony is not only enhancing the user experience but also reinforcing the PS5's position as a desirable gaming console.

This development is a clear indication of the gaming industry's recognition of the importance of aesthetic appeal and personalization in gaming hardware, although, to be honest, most would prefer to see Sony release custom-themed consoles more often, like the one with Final Fantasy 16 and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth coming out soon and no custom-themed face plates in sight, it's clear that Sony isn't as incentivized to sell limited edition designs unlike with the PlayStation 4. But, then again, when your console is selling like hotcakes and you spend more than half its lifecycle trying to keep up with the demand, you can't blame Sony.
