Sony Mocked By Fans Ahead of September State of Play Presentation

Cynicism about Sony's penchant for unwanted remasters aside, you can't blame the company for wanting to squeeze as much money out of their existing properties. Video games are getting more expensive to make, and they're not about to get any cheaper anytime soon. While the $70 price hike a while back offered some reprieve, there has also been plenty of pushback. When you combine it with the $400 million or so that Sony lost on Concord alone—Sony also threw away money by canceling live service projects, including The Last of Us multiplayer offshoot—and it's easy to see why it's scrambling to increase its bottom line even though the PS5 is technically outpacing the PS4 despite all that has happened in its four-year lifecycle so far.

If it's any consolation, Sony does have a couple of new exclusives lined up for next year, some of which we already know about: Marvel's Wolverine, Death Stranding 2, and Fairgame$. You can also throw in Grand Theft Auto 6 since people can't seem to separate the upcoming Rockstar Games title from Sony's ninth-generation video game console.

Coincidentally, some creatively minded fans are using this opportunity to mock the latest announcement by PlayStation and bring Nintendo into the conversation. The theory is that Nintendo might announce the Nintendo Switch 2 right after the September State of Play presentation ends to pull the rug right underneath them. This may or may not happen, but it's not impossible either—Nintendo is expected to announce the Switch 2 soon, possibly at the Tokyo Game Show on September 26.

We'll find out more about Sony's plans for the holiday season soon. The console manufacturer has already confirmed the limited edition 30th anniversary collection and bundle tomorrow ahead of the showcase.

In other Sony news, the God of War: Ragnarok PC port isn't off to a good start, both in terms of player count and performance. Modders have already stepped in to fill the gap left by Sony's lackluster porting effort.
