In the spirit of gaming’s latest tradition,”if it ain’t broke, remaster it,” the whispers through the rumor mill have finally been confirmed: Until Dawn is clawing its way out of the PlayStation 4 vault and onto the PlayStation 5 and – drumroll! – PC.

UK-based developer Ballistic Moon will take charge of resurrecting Until Dawn, ensuring that the spine-chilling essence of the original game, developed by Supermassive Games, is not just preserved but enhanced. This includes new locations to explore (or to get horrifically lost in, depending on your sense of direction) and a third-person camera that offers a fresh perspective on your gory doom.

Until Dawn is set in a remote mountain retreat and follows a group of eight young adults who decide to spend the night in a cabin on the anniversary of the disappearance of two of their friends. As the night unfolds, the group encounters a series of life-threatening situations which they tackle head-on with horror movie tier idiotic decisions that no real people would ever make.

Every decision you make triggers the game’s famed ‘Butterfly Effect’ system, where each choice spins the story in wildly different directions and affects the fate of the characters accordingly. Players control all eight characters, maneuvering through the game’s story while facing quick-time events, solving puzzles, and making crucial decisions.

Masterfully combining cinematic storytelling with interactive gameplay, Until Dawn blends horror tropes with an unpredictable storyline, further enhanced by stellar motion capture and voice performances from stars like Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere.

As for the release date, the details are still shrouded in mystery, but Sony has confirmed that the remastered nightmare will hit the shelves sometime this year. You can check out the PS5 and PC announcement trailer for the interactive slasher adventure below.

In related news, Sony has revealed that a live-action adaptation of Until Dawn is in the works. The film, which will be produced by Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions, will be directed by David F. Sandberg from a script written by Blair Butler.
