Sony and Kojima Productions has officially confirmed the title and release date for the eagerly awaited sequel to Death Stranding. The upcoming game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, is set to launch in 2025.
The announcement bookended Sony’s first State of Play showcase this year, where it came with a new trailer featuring a host of story details and showcasing various environments and characters.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will continue the journey of Sam Bridges, played by Norman Reedus, now working for a civilian outfit, Drawbridge. The game promises to take players on an inspiring mission of human connection, as Sam sets out to save humanity from extinction. The trailer hints at the return of several characters, including the antagonist Higgs, played by Troy Baker, who now sports a Joker-esque makeover. The trailer also features a new talking doll, adding to the game’s intrigue and mystery.
While Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has been confirmed for a 2025 release on PS5, details about a potential PC port remain unclear. The original Death Stranding was released for PS4 in November 2019 and subsequently arrived on PC in July 2020, followed by a Director’s Cut release in 2021.
Given Sony’s trend of releasing first-party games on PC, On the Beach is expected to make its way to PC, presumably in 2026. It’s unclear if the sequel will be available on PC Game Pass as well.
The follow-up is part of a broader slate of projects at Kojima Productions. The studio is also collaborating with A24 for a live-action film based on Death Stranding and is working on a mysterious Xbox horror game.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to expand on the unique gameplay and narrative style of the original game. The trailer showcases a blend of gameplay and cinematics, promising a continuation of the open-world exploration and its surprisingly robust base-building mechanics, along with new high-tech vehicles and enemies. The game’s premise raises the question, “should we have connected?” and promises to explore new dimensions of storytelling in gaming.
With its diverse environments, intriguing characters, and a haunting storyline, On the Beach is poised to be yet another groundbreaking title for the video game auteur.
