In the world of first-person shooters, there’s nothing quite like a good game of Call of Duty. If we believe the rumors, fans of the series are about to get another chapter in the form of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
The sequel to Modern Warfare 2, believed to be helmed by Sledgehammer Games, appears to be the subject of a series of teasing social media posts. The most prominent hint came from Sledgehammer’s new social media logo, which replaces the “E” with a red, sideways “III”, seemingly hinting at Modern Warfare 3.
This follows up on previous leaks and reports suggesting that a reboot of Modern Warfare 3 is already in development. It’s worth noting, however, that Activision has yet to officially confirm the official title for the 2023 release albeit we can’t say the same for Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley.

Previously, it was believed that Activision Blizzard wouldn’t release a new game until at least 2024 with Treyarch at the helm. But, multiple reports from over the past year suggest otherwise. Apparently, a planned premium expansion for the record-setting entry, Modern Warfare 2, has been re-packaged into a new entry, presumably to make it easier to sell for the current pricing standard of $70 as opposed to $30 or $40, which is the usual price of expansions.
Interestingly, several leaks have started to paint a picture of what Modern Warfare 3 might entail. An alleged promotional leak from Monster Energy drink revealed Captain Price, a prominent character from the Modern Warfare series, complete with a Modern Warfare 3 logo emblazoned in red. The tease also included a hint of another familiar face, Vladimir Makarov, one of the series’ main antagonists.
The gameplay itself is expected to continue the tradition of multiplayer, campaign, and a Zombies mode. In fact, one of the more intriguing rumors claims Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode could feature a second version of the popular Outbreak mode originally introduced by Treyarch in Black Ops Cold War. Additionally, the upcoming entry may feature remastered maps from previous games. This is further complemented by the rumor of a return of the War mode, reminiscent of Call of Duty: WWII.
A leak suggests that the perk system might be revamped this time around as well. Instead of the conventional model, the players might be able to choose gear items such as vests, boots, and gloves with built-in perks. The leaks also indicate the return of the classic minimap, changing the dynamics of unsuppressed weapons in the game.
In the meanwhile, the next major reveal for the Call of Duty franchise is expected to happen alongside the announcement of the fifth and final season of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
On the business side, the rumors come amid Activision Blizzard’s ongoing legal issues, with the company now poised to be acquired by Microsoft. Despite these uncertainties, the Call of Duty franchise has a secured future on Sony platforms, courtesy of a contract signed with Microsoft.
All things considered, Modern Warfare 3 has a lot of expectations to live up to. As we stand on the cusp of this reveal, fans of the series are eager to know what the future holds.
