Sea of Thieves, the renowned open-world pirate adventure game by Rare, is charting a course for PlayStation 5, with its voyage set to begin on April 30. The game’s launch on PS5 not only introduces it to a new audience but also signifies the first instance of a Rare game appearing on a PlayStation platform.
This marks a significant expansion for the game, which has enjoyed widespread acclaim and a strong player base since its initial release for Xbox One and PC via Microsoft Store in March 2018, later extending to Steam in June 2020 and Xbox Series on November 10, 2020.
The transition of Sea of Thieves to PS5 is part of Microsoft’s strategy to bring four of its previously Xbox exclusive titles to other platforms, including the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. This move, confirmed through a series of announcements, also includes Grounded, Pentiment, and Hi-Fi Rush, making their way to other consoles.
Rare itself announced the PS5 launch date for Sea of Thieves, emphasizing the game’s full cross-play support. This feature will enable players across Xbox One, Series X|S, PC, PS5, and Xbox Cloud Gaming to join forces or face off on the high seas, ensuring a seamless multiplayer experience across different platforms.
Sea of Thieves has been celebrated for its dynamic pirate-themed world, offering a vast ocean to explore, mysteries to unravel, and thrilling naval battles. From engaging in its treasure hunts to battling mythical creatures of the deep and participating in epic story-driven quests, the game has consistently evolved with regular free content updates. The updates have introduced new voyages, tools, islands, and even crossovers with other iconic pirate franchises, enriching the gameplay and keeping the community engaged.
With the PS5 version, players can expect all the updates and adventures that have been added to the game over the years, including popular expansions like the Pirates of the Caribbean-themed Tall Tale.
Rare’s commitment to improving Sea of Thieves with features like the Safer Seas mode for newcomers and plans for ongoing enhancements ensures that Sea of Thieves will continue to remain a vibrant and appealing title for both existing fans and new players on PS5.
The launch of Sea of Thieves on PS5 coincides with Season 12, though details of what this season entails have yet to be fully unveiled.
