Few actors can boast roles in the cinematic universes of both of the “big two” in comics. Henry Cavill, former Superman actor, already has a lot on his plate, but rumors suggest he will make a cameo appearance as a Wolverine variant from another dimension in the upcoming MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine.
The first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer debuted during Super Bowl 2024. Even if it only showed half-a-second of the returning Hugh Jackman, the trailer exploded with record-breaking viewership, making Ryan Reynolds’ joke of being “Marvel Jesus” almost prophetic.
This speculation gained traction on X (formerly Twitter), with a tweet from film scooper @CanWeGetToast, affirming Cavill’s presence in Deadpool & Wolverine and teasing fans with the promise of a “satisfying appearance”.
I can confirm that Henry Cavill will in fact play a Wolverine variant in ‘DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE’.

However, fans should note that there has not been any official confirmation regarding Cavill’s role in the film. If true, Cavill’s portrayal could introduce an intriguing twist, depending on which version of Logan he will be portraying. There were already prior rumors of Daniel Radcliffe playing the “Patch” version of Wolverine in the very brief glimpse from the first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer.
This would not be the first time Henry Cavill has been rumored to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some capacity. The fan-favorite actor previously played DCEU’s Superman and Geralt of Rivia in the first two seasons of the Netflix The Witcher series. In recent years, his name was attached to MCU roles such as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Silver Surfer, Captain Britain, and The Sentry.
In addition to Cavill’s rumored involvement, speculation about other characters and actors joining the Deadpool & Wolverine cast has intensified. James Marsden, who portrayed Cyclops in the Fox X-Men franchise, caught fans’ attention with cryptic comments suggesting a possible appearance in the film.
Marsden’s remarks during an interview with The Playlist for the film Knox Goes Away (along with co-star Michael Keaton) included that it was convenient for being close to the Deadpool 3 production, prompting fans to suspect that Marsden is returning to his role as Cyclops.
While Marsden remained tight-lipped about the specifics of his involvement, fans mused the significance of his comments, eager to see his turn as Scott Summers back on the big screen. This is exactly the kind of fan service Marvel could exploit to turn things around.
However, not all of the news of X-Men actors returning are as promising. Vinnie Jones, who essayed the role of Cain Marko/The Juggernaut in X3 (2006), was also approached for a cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine, but negotiations unfortunately did not push through.
With Deadpool 3 poised to bring Ryan Reynolds’s Merc-with-a-Mouth into the MCU, fans anticipate the funny meta-commentary of Wade Wilson on Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Of course, just as important is integrating the X-Men franchise into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe which was already teased in the post-credits scene of The Marvels (2023) that featured Hank McCoy (aka Beast) voiced by Kelsey Grammer.
The prospect of Henry Cavill and James Marsden joining the cast of Deadpool & Wolverine has generated considerable excitement among X-Men fans. What do you think of Cavill appearing as a Wolverine variant? Would you prefer he take on the role as officially the new Wolverine in the MCU? With Taylor Swift also rumored to be appearing as Dazzler, which other characters would you like to see and who should portray them?
Deadpool & Wolverine is scheduled for theatrical release on July 26, 2024.
