Roblox is transitioning away from remote work. The company’s CEO David Baszucki communicated this in a letter to its employees on Tuesday.
Baszucki wrote, “Today we will be asking a number of our remote employees to begin working from our headquarters in San Mateo by next summer and transitioning away from remote work at Roblox.” He clarified that employees will be required to be at the office three days a week – from Tuesdays to Thursdays.
In the letter, Baszucki acknowledged the gravity of the decision. He empathized with staff who would be affected by the change but reiterated that the company’s interests would be best served by the transition.
The CEO outlined the rationale behind this move, explaining that cohorts, including new college graduates and new hires, learn best through social interaction with senior employees. He explained that the current remote work culture denies them the mentorship that comes from that interaction.

For context, Baszucki shared an incident where, during Roblox’s first in-person meeting following the global pandemic, he implemented a handful of innovative ideas. He contrasted this with previous years, when meetings were exclusively virtual, and pointed out the lack of such experiences.
The CEO rounded off his argument by explaining that in-person meetings are less exhausting than virtual ones.
Roblox’s move aligns with a wider global trend that has seen many companies implore their employees to return to the office. Recently, serial tech entrepreneur Elon Musk bashed the work from home crowd and claimed they are detached from reality.
Unlike Musk, Roblox seems to be going about its transition process in a humane and empathetic manner.
For one, the company is giving affected employees three months to decide. For those unwilling to relocate, Roblox will be offering another three months to transition out of their roles as full-time employees. Beyond that, the company will offer “six months of healthcare coverage for everyone on their policies.”
For employees who adhere to the company’s directive, Baszucki promised that Roblox will help with their relocation as well as the associated costs. They will also get a further six months to finalize their relocation plans as they will begin working from Roblox’s headquarters by July 15, 2024.
Roblox’s move is in line with the company’s recent efforts to become more profitable which saw it let go of employees. If Roblox became more innovative, as the CEO believes, it would solidify its position as one of the leading online game platforms on the planet.
By the way, Roblox is now available on the PlayStation 4. The online game platform arrived on the console on October 10 and is accessible via the PlayStation Store.
