Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is coming to the PC in July

Why this massive PC port announcement wasn't part of the May 24 PlayStation Showcase is one of life's biggest mysteries.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will be challenging to port because of its need for the SSD but the announcement implies that Sony is confident in the PC version's performance.

It’s official: Insomniac Games and Sony are bringing Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart to the PC in July.

One of the first exclusives for the PlayStation 5 to be released, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart received excellent reviews when it came out and was nominated for the GOTY award in 2021. On July 26, PC gamers will be able to enjoy Rift Apart with the complete lineup of PC-exclusive improvements like ultrawide support, unlocked frame rates, and support for several PC-exclusive features like DLSS 3, FSR 2, and Intel XeSSS upscaling.

Other PC-exclusive features that Rift Apart will enjoy include support for multiple aspect ratios (21:9, 32:9, and 48:9) as well as Nvidia’s Reflex technology and DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing).

Nixxes Software previously hinted that Rift Apart’s PC port was in the works in a job listing.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will likely not be the last PC port of a PS5 exclusive that’s coming out this year.

Julian Huijbregs, a community specialist at Nixxes Software, didn’t reveal the minimum and recommended hardware specifications for Rift Apart for the PC port in the official announcement. This is particularly noteworthy as Rift Apart was meant to be played on the PS5, which houses proprietary SSD technology.

Rift Apart heads to the PC just months after Naughty Dog fumbled the ball on The Last of Us Part 1’s PC port. To date, the game still has “Mixed” reviews on Steam but the most recent ones have been labeled as “Mostly Positive.

But, unlike Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games and Nixxes Software have a more solid history of working together on PC ports. Case in point, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales encountered minimal issues with the PC launch. While we won’t say it with 100% certainty, the PC port of Rift Apart should fare better, especially if Insomniac and Nixxes have found a workaround for the SSD requirement.

Sony previously spoke out about its ambitious release plans for PC ports and mobile games by 2025, solidifying its plans to grow the brand outside of the standard PlayStation platform.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is widely considered one of the best entries in the series.

Now that Rift Apart is finally heading to the PC, as per earlier leaks, the next ones up are most likely Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West based on Sony’s own timeline.
