Fans of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth fantasy works are well acquainted with Gollum’s famous quote: “It came to me. My own. My love. My own. My Precious.” Just like Gollum, one unlikely person is probably saying these same words now that they’re in possession of the ultra-rare, one-of-a-kind The One Ring card, and it’s not just anyone.
For those who might be unfamiliar with what we’re talking about, this is the story of how one Austin Richard Post, better known as Post Malone, became the proud owner of The One Ring card from the Magic: The Gathering x Lord of the Rings crossover.
It began with the forging of the first cards from Magic: The Gathering’s next Universes Beyond crossover set, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth. 300 Elven Sol Ring Cards, 700 Dwarven Sol Ring Cards, 900 Human Sol Ring Cards, and The One Ring Card.
When MTG fans learned that only one copy of The One Ring card would be printed, an online bidding war began before even the popular crossover set was released. The bounty for the card quickly shot to $500,000, courtesy of NFL player Cassius Marsh Sr., before Dave & Adam’s Card World raised the ante to $1 million. Ultimately, the bounty peaked at $2 million before it was finally found, authenticated, and graded at Mint 9 by the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA).
Now, one month later, @BrookTrafton, who was the lucky owner of The One Ring card, decided to finally part ways with it, selling it to Post Malone for an undisclosed figure. Brook Tafton, whose identity was previously unknown, shared this jubilant moment on Twitter, saying:
This is my dream come true, meeting @PostMalone and him buying the One Ring card from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairytale. @PostMalone @wizards_magic you’ve changed my life. Things like this don’t happen to people like me. Forever grateful 🙏 ✨ #mtg #onering

Post Malone, the renowned 28-year-old rapper, has made quite a name for himself as an avid enthusiast of MTG, the world’s best known trading card game. Last year, he allegedly set a new record by acquiring a signed, artist-proof Black Lotus card for an incredible $800,000. This extravagant purchase firmly established it as the most expensive Magic: The Gathering card at the time.
Post Malone can now proudly claim ownership of not just one, but two of the most valuable MTG cards in the entire world. The one-of-a-kind status of one of these cards only adds to the exclusivity of his impressive collection and his fame in the world of trading cards.
