Sony Interactive Entertainment is hosting its first major gaming event of 2024, the PlayStation State of Play, on January 31. This 40-minute broadcast will cover more than 15 games, featuring extended previews of Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin.
Scheduled to start at 2:00 PM PT / 5:00 PM ET, audiences can livestream the event via PlayStation’s YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok channels.
The upcoming State of Play is expected to focus on updates to games coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 for 2025 and beyond. This showcase follows the previous State of Play episode in September, which included a diverse mix of games such as Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Bennett Fody’s Baby Steps, and Helldivers 2. The September episode also spotlighted Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, setting its release date for February 29, 2024, and showcased gameplay for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Sony’s announcement of the State of Play presentation comes shortly after Microsoft’s Developer Direct presentation, a surprisingly robust event that featured Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Visions of Mana, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, and Avowed. Nintendo, usually hosting a Nintendo Direct presentation in February, has not yet confirmed an event for this year.
Viewers of the January State of Play can expect “extended looks” at Shift Up’s Stellar Blade, formerly referred to as Project Eve, and Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin. The potential appearances include titles such as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake, and Konami’s Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Other games, revealed at last year’s PlayStation Showcase and planned for future release, may also be updated, including titles such as Haven Studios’ Fairgame$, Bungie’s Marathon, and Firewalk Studios’ Concord.
Early reports suggest PlayStation fans may get a glimpse of a remastered version of Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn, which Sony is adapting into a live-action horror film, and Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding 2. In addition, with Sony having exclusive rights to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for now, it’s likely to be featured in the presentation.
Other titles that might appear include the Silent Hill 2 Remake and the rumored new Metro game. Spider-Man fans are also anticipating updates on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s New Game Plus mode and further DLCs. FromSoftware enthusiasts are also hopeful for news about Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, rumored to be releasing soon, as the most GOTY’d game of all time prepares to celebrate its second anniversary.
