PlayStation gets first dibs on The Callisto Protocol: Final Transmission DLC

Striking Distance Studios is hoping that the release of The Callisto Protocol's final DLC will help change public perception on the game.

For all its flaws, The Callisto Protocol was a beautiful game that made the most out of Unreal Engine 4.

Developed by Striking Distance Studios, The Callisto Protocol attempted to fill the void left by Dead Space, only to be met with a lukewarm reception. But the fight isn’t over yet. The developers are determined to have another roll of the dice with their latest endeavour – the game’s final story DLC, Final Transmission.

Although the game underperformed at launch, the developers continued to release updates and new content, including the introduction of Hardcore Mode, the addition of Outer Way skins, the implementation of a wave-based Riot mode, and more. All of these updates demonstrate a dedication to enhancing the gameplay experience and making the most out of the ambitious world they’ve created.

Now, they’ve decided to up the ante with the introduction of Final Transmission, a DLC they refer to as a “heart-pounding final chapter.”

The Callisto Protocol story DLC, as part of its season pass, is set to drop first on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on June 27. It will then land on other platforms, including PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, on June 29, 48 hours later.

A brief but enticing teaser trailer sees protagonist Jacob Lee awakening and coming face to face with an intimidating and colossal robot. What this confrontation will entail, and how it will expand upon the narrative, is a thrilling mystery.

This development is the first narrative-based expansion for The Callisto Protocol, following previous DLCs that consisted of cosmetic additions and new game modes.

The decision to provide PlayStation users with a 48-hour exclusivity window may be a play to drive sales on that platform, particularly considering the game’s prior disappointing sales numbers.

A sequel to The Callisto Protocol would be able to refine the experience and gameplay while building on everything good from the first game.

Regardless of the motivations, it’s certainly a noteworthy move and it’ll be interesting to see how this strategy will pay off.

Despite the initial setbacks, Striking Distance Studios and publisher Krafton are clearly intent on leaving a strong, lasting impression with the Final Transmission story DLC. Critics and fans alike are eagerly watching, waiting to see how this final chapter will tie up any loose ends and hopefully breathe fresh life into this beleaguered title. Only time will tell whether this bold strategy will succeed in revitalizing the game and regaining the faith of its audience.

As for Dead Space, EA Motive had a ton of success with its remake with a sequel all but confirmed already. It’s unclear if The Callisto Protocol will be getting a second lease in life, but it’ll be interesting to see these two go head-to-head again in the future.
