Wes Craven turned the slasher genre on its head with 1996's Scream, with the series receiving three more installments throughout the years. Unfortunately, following the iconic director's untimely death in 2015, the franchise was all but dead until directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett brought the series back to prominence. After their work on 2019's comedy horror film, Ready or Not, the duo silenced critics and naysayers by combining nostalgia with a fresh take on slasher movies.
Now, it appears that they've given Paramount Pictures enough reason to greenlight a sequel that will be here in just a little over a year following Scream 5's premiere.
Scream 5's success came as a total shock to a lot of people. After several production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the requel, as the movie calls it, finally hit theaters on January 14 and stabbed its way to the top of the box office, and became the first film to oust Spider-Man: No Way Home.
With $139 million made at the global box office and a 76% Rotten Tomatoes score, the new Scream was just begging for a sequel, but fans probably didn't expect it to come so soon.
