Early last year, Paramount announced it was developing a Sonic the Hedgehog television series titled Knuckles featuring a character from the franchise’s second installment. While the announcement revealed that Idris Elba will play the character in both the film and the television series, it did not reveal any other cast member.
Now, a little over a year after the announcement, the Sonic the Hedgehog spinoff show’s cast has finally been revealed by Variety. The publication revealed that, apart from Elba, the television series will see Adam Pally and Tika Sumpter reprise their roles as Wade Whipple and Maddie respectively from the film franchise.
However, where Pally will be one of the show’s main cast members, Sumpter will only have a guest role. Edi Patterson, Julian Barratt, Scott Mescudi, and Ellie Taylor will also star, although as recurring actors while Rory McCann is another actor that will have a guest role.
The Variety report also revealed that Knuckles will see the titular character take Wade Whipple under his wing and guide him on his path to becoming an Echidna warrior. The show’s story will take place between the events of the franchise’s second installment, released last April, and the events of the third installment which will arrive in December 2024.
John Whittington, a scriptwriter on Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is the show’s lead writer as well as one of its executive producers. Jeff Fowler, also a Sonic the Hedgehog alumnus given he directed both existing installments, will direct its pilot episode with Ged Wright, Brandon Trost, Jorma Taccone, and Carol Banker also taking up directorial roles.
Furthermore, Fowler will serve as an executive producer alongside Elba, Neal H. Moritz, and Toby Ascher. While Knuckles was originally slated to arrive sometime in 2023, there is no telling if this is still the case given that production is still underway in London.
Earlier this month news surfaced that SEGA, the company behind Sonic the Hedgehog, is close to acquiring Rovio Entertainment and, by extension, its Angry Birds IP. If that happens, there is a chance SEGA will develop crossover video games and feature films that involve Sonic the Hedgehog and Angry Birds.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is slated to arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024.
