If Pokemon has the phrase, “Gotta Catch ‘Em All”, then maybe Palworld’s equivalent is, “Sell As Many As Possible.”
We know it’s bad, but the numbers that Palworld just keeps on posting is good for both its developers, Pocket Pair, and the folks paying for exclusivity, Xbox.
Released in early access, Palworld became available across PC and Xbox Series S/X on January 19 and within just hours of launching, it had already sold over one million units. This remarkable achievement was announced by the developer on social media, along with an image celebrating the occasion, showcasing the game’s tamable critters.

Palworld’s concept, often referred to as “Pokémon with guns,” successfully combined the charm of the popular multi-media franchise with the intensity and excitement of a survival game, a combination that has resonated strongly with fans. The early access launch saw the game reach a peak of 200,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, a number that rapidly increased to an estimated 560,000, according to Steam Database. The inclusion of the game in Game Pass has made it difficult to determine the exact number of players, but the initial response indicates a debut comparable to other indie hits like Valheim.
Furthermore, the reception of Palworld has been overwhelmingly positive, with a “Very Positive” rating on Steam based on over 2,400 user reviews at the time of the announcement. Its players have been captivated by the gameplay loop of fighting, crafting, and survival alongside or against various oversized critters. However, Palworld is adding a twist to the familiar monster-taming genre by incorporating elements like capturing human beings and setting up a supply chain in an in-game black market, offering a more complex and darker theme than its more light-hearted counterparts.
The success of Palworld is also a testament to the influence of word-of-mouth and streamer communities in the gaming world today. The game’s launch period was relatively quiet in terms of new game releases, which may have contributed to its standout performance. Additionally, the significant peak in concurrent players on Steam indicates the game’s popularity and potential longevity in the gaming market.
This launch success also highlights the evolving dynamics of game distribution and player preferences. Despite being available on Game Pass, many players still chose to purchase the game on Steam, possibly due to the lack of cross-play or cross-progression features between Steam and Xbox or the Windows version of the game. This behavior suggests that while subscription services like Game Pass are valuable entry points into the market, they do not entirely replace traditional game purchasing platforms.
As Palworld navigates its early success, server stability has become a challenge, with the developer actively working to address connection issues caused by the unexpectedly high volume of players. Despite these technical difficulties, the game’s popularity continues to soar, drawing comparisons to other successful titles and setting a high bar for indie games in the future.
