New Star Wars strategy game rumored to be in development at AAA studio

Is this a trap? A new rumor suggests that a "big-name" studio is currently developing a real-time strategy game set in the Star Wars universe.

Between May the Fourth and Revenge of the Fifth, the internet is drowning in Star Wars related content, news and deals – even if a lot of that is being overshadowed by the troubled PC launch of Jedi Survivor. As the gaming world is still reeling from one launch, a new rumor indicates that a major studio is cooking a real-time strategy game.

The days of the Star Wars game drought from the early days of the EA exclusive license are long behind us, and there are a lot more titles from the galaxy far, far away being developed by various studios than you might think. Now we can add another to that growing pile, if these rumors pan out.

Empire at War let players take control of the Empire or the Rebellion.

VGC editor Andy Robinson tweeted a reply to a post from fellow journalist Josh West waxing nostalgic about Empire at War. The message reads “I imagine you won’t have to wait much longer for a Star Wars RTS from a big-name developer…”

West responded with a reference to another title being developed by Bit Reactor and Respawn, leading Robinson to clarify he meant an unannounced title. No further details, such as what “big-name” developer is being referred to, was shared.

Star Wars is no stranger to the RTS genre, with Empire at War being the most recognized of the lot. There were other such games, such as Galactic Battlegrounds and Force Commander, though all of these are quite aged at this point. Only some recent mobile titles could be charitably lumped in with these classics, if you are looking for something more recent.

Star Wars fans will have plenty of games to play in the coming years.

While the idea of playing strategy games with a controller doesn’t sound quite as outlandish as it did a decade ago, RTS still makes most gamers think PC first and foremost. Hopefully whatever big-name studio is working on this Star Wars strategy title will ensure the game runs better than Jedi Survivor did
