Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the highest-rated comic book film of all time. Its upcoming sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, has a strong chance of swinging past it for the top spot.
After getting a hype-inducing trailer last year, Sony gave audiences a new look at the follow-up and it pretty much confirms that a heart-breaking Spider-Man staple is central to the film’s story.
As if losing his uncle Aaron Morales, The Prowler, in the first film wasn’t enough, the sequel will up the stakes and Miles Morales will basically need to choose between saving the person he loves or saving the multiverse. This familiar Spider-Man conundrum also explains why Miles Morales’ Spider-Man has a target on his back, led by Miguel O’Hara, otherwise known as Spider-Man 2099.
Heavy is the head that wears the crown, or in this case, the head that wears the mask, and the trailer proves that Across the Spider-Verse will double down on everything that made its predecessor so good.
If it’s any consolation, Across the Spider-Verse’s latest trailer isn’t all bleak and emotional. There’s that one bit where it calls out Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, the Spider-Man of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who hails from Earth-199999. This fuelled speculation that Tom Holland will appear in the Spider-Man sequel following the most recent rumors.
However, it wouldn’t surprise us if Sony manages to squeeze in both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in the movie. We aren’t sure which universe they’re from now, but Sony will probably find a way to make it work even if only for a quick cameo.
Besides, who cares about timelines and continuities when Across the Spider-Verse is as good of a reason as any to do it?
The trailer already has voiceovers from all three live-action Spider-Man actors, so who’s to say that they’re not more heavily involved?
The only problem is that Holland alone could overshadow Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales. So, bringing all three together for another film that stars a “different” Spider-Man could prove to be a tough nut to crack. But, it’s a good challenge to have, and it wouldn’t hurt to use this opportunity to tease Morales’ live-action MCU debut again.
For now, we’ll just have to wait until Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on June 2, or for Holland to spoil important details once again.
