The Joaquin Phoenix-led 2019 film Joker was a massive critical and commercial success. The film grossed over $1 billion at the global box office and also won numerous accolades, including an Oscar Award for Best Actor.
Naturally, a sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, is in the works. The movie is currently filming and, according to recently released set photos, it might feature another iconic Batman villain, Two-Face, whose real name is Harvey Dent.
Throughout several adaptations, Dent is the District Attorney and former Bruce Wayne pal who eventually became one of his greatest adversaries, Two-Face.

The set photos showed protesters gathering in front of a courthouse with signs proclaiming “Free Joker,” “Joker 4 President,” “No Justice in Gotham,” and “Dent is A Clown.” While Harvey Dent didn’t feature in the first film, Folie à Deux will tell a new story and the character could very well feature. However, there is no way to know for sure as there is little to no information available about the film.
Apart from the reference to Harvey Dent, the set photos also showed the Harley Quinn character entering a huge building in her customary red, black, and white costume.
Joker: Folie à Deux’s official synopsis reads, “The musical sequel follows Harley Quinn, the Arkham Asylum shrink who falls in love with her patient Arthur Fleck, aka Joker.”

The Folie à Deux appendage of Joker: Folie à Deux translates as Madness for Two. The sequel will chronicle the romance between the titular character and his canonical partner in crime Harley Quinn. Speaking on the chemistry between the two characters, Sher, a cinematographer on the film’s set, revealed last October, “The combination of the two will be exactly what we hope, which is exciting, and we’ll find magic every day on set. Hopefully, we’ll also have a bit of madness in there. We like when there is a little bit of chaos.”
The film will see Joaquin Phoenix reprise his role as Arthur Fleck and Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond. It will also feature Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn with Brendan Gleeson, Harry Lawtey, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland starring in undisclosed roles. Todd Phillips will also return to direct based on a script by himself and Todd Silver.
By the way, the recently released set photos are not the only sneak peek that fans have gotten into Joker: Folie à Deux. In February, director Todd Phillips gave fans their first look at Lady Gaga in character as Harley Quinn via a photo he posted to his Instagram account that showed her in a scene with her co-star Phoenix.
Since coming on as the new DC Studio co-chairs, James Gunn and Peter Safran have been reorganizing the DC Universe. While the co-CEOs have ditched most of the projects that do not fit into their interlinked plan for the studio’s future, they announced earlier this year that they will continue to support Phillips’s Joker series under a new banner tagged DC Elseworlds.
Joker: Folie à Deux is currently slated for release on October 4, 2024.
