Lies of P vs Giants: How the Korean Game Topped Worldwide Charts

Lies of P is one of the more unique and better stabs at the Soulsborne genre that FromSoftware popularized over the last decade.

Lies of P proves that there's a lot of demand for Soulslike games that are as good as the ones that started it all.

Lies of P has achieved a monumental success by selling over a million copies in just under a month since its release back in September. This new take on the dark fairy tale of Pinocchio not only earned accolades from players and critics alike but also showcased the potential and capability of Korean console games on the global stage.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic Italian novel Pinocchio, Lies of P plunges players into a grim Belle Époque world, a universe where the once-stunning city of Krat is now a dystopia, overridden with malevolent puppets and plagued by a disastrous ailment. Players step into the shoes of a puppet on a relentless quest to find Geppetto, endeavoring to gain his humanity. As the narrative unfolds, the game pushes players into a maze of lies, where every falsehood told brings the protagonist closer to humanity. However, in a world dominated by deceit, trust becomes an invaluable commodity.

On the technical front, Lies of P has been received exceptionally well across various platforms. The aggregate scores on Metacritic stand testament to its wide acclaim, with ratings averaging 80 on PlayStation 5, 83 on PC, and 84 on Xbox Series S/X. Furthermore, a staggering 89% of players on Steam rated the game positively. Suffice to say that the highly acclaimed soulslike game developed by South korean game developer, NEOWIZ, in collaboration with Round8 Studio, has struck gold.

One of the game’s defining moments prior to its launch was its unparalleled success during Steam Next Fest and similar events. Surpassing the expectations of its developers, Lies of P became one of the top 100 most-played games on Steam across the globe.

Recognizing its skyrocketing popularity, the decision to indefinitely extend Lies of P’s demo was made. To date, it’s still available to check for those curious to see what the fuss is all about. This move proved to be a masterstroke, as within a mere three days, the demo witnessed over a million downloads across both PC and console platforms.

The gaming industry has been bustling with various titles attempting to capture the magic of masterpieces produced by giants like FromSoftware. Since June, new entries such as Remnant 2 and now, Lies of P, and Lords of the Fallen, which is already helping fund CI Games’ future endeavors, have left their respective individual indelible marks on the genre. But, a fact that makes Lies of P unique is that it’s not just derivative of the genre’s stalwarts – it adds a unique twist to the masterpieces produced by FromSoftware, making it distinct and fresh.

An expansion or two will likely help NEOWIZ expand Lies of P while setting up a sequel for later this decade.

Launching on Xbox Game Pass provided Lies of P with a significant boost as well. This allowed the game to benefit from Microsoft’s massively popular subscription service without any discernible impact on its robust sales figures. This kind of success becomes even more pronounced when compared to other titles in the genre. For instance, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, despite originating from the renowned studio Team Ninja, required almost two months to achieve a milestone similar to what Lies of P achieved in a month.

The overwhelming success of Lies of P has inevitably led to speculations about potential expansions and sequels. What’s reinforcing these speculations are recent job listings by NEOWIZ hinting at the development of downloadable content for Lies of P.

While the studio has yet to make an official announcement, many believe that it’s coming any day now.
