Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been out for only less than three months, but for PC players, especially fans of the Spider-Man franchise, it feels like an eternity. This is why some modders have decided to take matters into their own hands and create a PC version of the action game.
Twitter user @PC_Focus_ shared footage of the unofficial PC port yesterday, which is surprisingly running smoothly at 60 FPS. However, there are no textures or visible UI, and it’s glitchy as video footage in a horror film. Still, giving credit where it’s due, these modders have achieved some pretty impressive results.
Speaking of credit, this is attributed to a lone wolf in the modding community, as revealed in a Discord conversation. The modder has made it clear they’re not sharing it with anyone until it’s good and ready, so don’t expect to get your hands on this build anytime soon. And that’s if it ever gets finished and released, which, let’s face it, is a big if.
The interesting bit is that the modders behind this are saying it’s “already running better than PS5.” Bold claim, right? Sure, textures have been added to the latest update, according to Reddit user u/RaxSahil, but let’s be real, we’re only seeing snippets here. So, take that with a grain of salt.
Fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 who would rather wait for the official PC port might not have to wait for too long. According to recently leaked information from the Insomniac Games hack, development is expected to wrap up in fiscal year 2024, which ends on March 31. As such, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 can make its PC debut anytime from April onwards.
This port is already shaping up to be Insomniac Games’ most ambitious and, might I add, expensive port ever made. It will reportedly cost $4.6 million to make, which is double the cost of the Spider-Man Remastered PC port.
Considering the cost Insomniac Games is incurring to bring Spider-Man 2 to PC, we doubt the unofficial PC port will make the studio change its mind about releasing it. No matter how well the modded port runs, the official PC port will be much better in quality. Furthermore, players who pirate games have little to no effect on game sales, so we doubt Insomniac Games is too concerned.
It’s unclear when this PC port is coming, but it’s unlikely to arrive before the unconfirmed DLC is released.
