In a move that’s got horror fans everywhere sharpening their knives (not literally, we hope), Miramax has just snagged the TV rights to the iconic Halloween franchise. And no, we’re not talking about a one-off special; the American production company is eyeing a full-blown cinematic universe that spans both TV and film.
Now, for those of you who might not be in the know, the Halloween franchise has been the talk of the town for a while. The TV rights for the 45-year-old franchise were up for grabs, and after what can only be described as a “bidding war of horror proportions,” Miramax emerged victorious, according to a report from Deadline.
The studio is teaming up with Trancas International Films, the bigwigs who control the franchise’s rights, to bring more Michael Myers terror to our living rooms. What’s more, if rumors are to be believed, they’re planning a Halloween cinematic universe that’s going to rival the MCU (well, minus the superheroes and plus a lot more scares).
Marc Helwig, Miramax’s Head of Global TV, couldn’t contain his excitement, stating:
We couldn’t be more excited to bring Halloween to television. We are thrilled to expand our long and successful partnership with Trancas and the brilliant Malek Akkad in introducing this iconic franchise to a new form of storytelling and a new generation of fans.
Michael Myers, with his infamous masked visage, has been the stuff of nightmares for decades, has racked up quite the body count across 13 feature films. The most recent installment, Halloween Ends, saw Myers meet a rather gruesome end, but as any horror fan knows, the big-bad villains have a knack for coming back.
Now, while Miramax is busy plotting Michael Myers’ TV takeover, it’s worth noting that other studios are on the hunt as well. The word on the street is that Blumhouse Productions, the mastermind behind some of the most thrilling horror flicks, is eyeing the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise. Maybe we might get to see Jason Voorhees vs. Michael Myers on TV? That’s a crossover that horror fans would eagerly pay to see.
With Miramax now holding both the film and TV rights, the possibilities are endless. Will the studio reboot the series with a new Michael and Laurie? Or perhaps introduce a copycat killer? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: with Michael Myers potentially making his way to TV, our binge-watching weekends are about to get a whole lot spookier.
