Minecraft cemented its status as the best-selling game ever at the turn of the decade after breaking past the 200 million mark. Since then, Mojang's widely popular sandbox title has shipped 100 million more units, with no signs of slowing down.

During the Minecraft Live 2023 event, the studio revealed that Minecraft has already sold over 300 million units across all platforms. The survival sandbox title now holds a 115 million lead over second place which belongs to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5. It looks like Minecraft will stay in first place for the foreseeable future.

As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks," Helen Chiang, head of Mojang Studios, said in a statement.

Mojang shared some of the numbers for Minecraft to celebrate the huge milestone.

With 300 million units, Minecraft is now in seventh place in the best-selling video game franchise list. Mario still holds a commanding lead with over 832 million units shipped since 1981. Minecraft could potentially overtake FIFA for the sixth place in the next year or so given that the football video game franchise will not be launching a new title anytime soon. New updates coming to Minecraft Mojang hosts these Minecraft Live livestream events to share news and updates for the game. Players may participate in the voting event to select which new creature should be added to the game. This year players had to choose between a crab, an armadillo, and a penguin. The armadillo won first place in this year's voting and will be added in a future update. Just so you know, we voted for the Penguin to win.
