Call of Duty: Mobile has been very successful, having over 650 million downloads since its release in October 2019. It has also been a profitable venture as players spent over $1 billion in 2021 in microtransactions following its release in China.
However, Activision plans to replace the game with the newer Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. Call of Duty: Mobile will be phased-out once Warzone Mobile launches later this year.
CoD: Mobile was developed and is owned by TiMi Studios, a subsidiary of Tencent," Microsoft said in its filed response to the UK CMA's investigation into its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. "CoD: Mobile is expected to be phased out over time (outside of China) with the launch of Warzone Mobile."
Recently, the UK CMA suggested that the tech giant should divest or exclude Call of Duty from the deal in order to have it approved. Microsoft has been reluctant to heed the advice given that Call of Duty enjoys a huge following which includes its mobile title.
