Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 made its highly anticipated debut on the PlayStation 5 a few days ago, eliciting excitement and applause from both fans and critics alike. Despite its relatively short length, it garnered a stellar 90% rating on Metacritic and solidified its position as a standout title – making it little surprise that there’s already plans for where the franchise could go next.
Adding fuel to the excitement, Bryan Intihar, the game’s creative director, hinted at the possibility of another installment in the series. Intihar recently shared insights on the development process of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 during an episode of the Friends Per Second podcast.
When asked about his approach to Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, should it come to fruition, Intihar’s response, although cryptic, has set the series’ enthusiasts abuzz with anticipation. He said, “If Spider-Man 1 and Miles Morales were like our Iron Man… If Spider-Man 2 was like a Civil War, where logically do we go from there? I think it would be pretty epic. But, you know, we’ll see.”
Intihar’s words are full of promise. Given the two MCU movies he mentioned, there is only one logical film Insomniac Games can model the next Marvel’s Spider-Man installment after and that is the climactic saga-finisher, Avengers: Endgame.
Avengers: Endgame is the second highest-grossing movie in box office history. If we are right, then Insomniac Games and PlayStation Studios would have set a pretty high bar for themselves. If they manage to pull it off, the result would undoubtedly be in the conversation for one of the best video games ever.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 got off to a spectacular start when it swung onto PS5s worldwide on October 20. The game beat Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder to the number 1 spot on the UK physical games chart. Its chart-topping numbers were also enough to make it the fourth biggest physical game launch in the UK this year.
Alongside this, the game sold over 2.5 million units within 24 hours of its release to depose last year’s God of War Ragnarök as the fastest-selling title in PlayStation Studios’ history. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s numbers indicate one thing – it is a game in high demand.
Because of this, fans fully expect Sony to develop another installment even if it wasn’t in the plans to begin with. However, its post-credits scene suggests the company always had those plans and its success will only serve to spur them on.
Since there is no official word from PlayStation Studios about the installment yet, there is also no information on a potential release date. Fortunately, the intervals between the previous titles in the series provide a clue into how long Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 could take.
The first title in the series, Marvel’s Spider-Man arrived in 2018, and the second, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was released only two years later. The longest interval between releases is three years, ending with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Given this pattern, we speculate that Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 will arrive within the next three years.
Unfortunately, there is one potential hurdle to this time frame, which is that Insomniac Games is currently working on another game in the Marvel universe titled Marvel’s Wolverine. Given the studio hasn’t volunteered information on its release date, there is no telling how far along it is.
If that game is still far off, then there is every possibility it will delay the development of Spider-Man 3 and extend its release further than speculated. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is available exclusively on the PlayStation 5.
