Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reportedly bringing back underrated villain in DLC

The Beetle has never been one of Spider-Man's most formidable foes, so it'll be interesting to see Insomniac Games' take on the character.

It looks like dataminers and cybersleuths haven’t let up since Insomniac Games’ massive hacking incident last year. After finding out information about the first-party PlayStation studio’s upcoming games, including a standalone Venom spin-off and a completely playable version of Marvel’s Wolverine on PC ahead of its release in 2026, there’s evidence now of an upcoming DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

@zvis_ceral, a trusted industry insider featured on several known publications, broke the news of the arrival of one of Spider-Man’s more underrated and lesser-known foes from the comic books, Beetle.

This upcoming DLC, which features the addition of several new missions, enemy types, and at least a couple of hours’ worth of content, will likely center around Miles Morales once again, presumably set after the events of the sequel as Peter Parker temporarily hangs up the suit to enjoy a relatively normal life with Mary Jane Watson.

The datamined information, in particular, reveals that this iteration of the Beetle will be Janice Lincoln, the daughter of Tombstone, one of the villains featured in the first Marvel’s Spider-Man.

In Spider-Man lore, Janice Lincoln, as the Beetle, dons a technologically advanced suit, equipped with flight capabilities, enhanced strength, and built-in weapons. This makes her a unique challenge for Miles Morales, the expected central character in the DLC, with Peter Parker retired following the events of the sequel.

The Beetle’s introduction could bring a fresh dynamic to the game, offering new missions, challenges, and experiences.

In terms of gameplay mechanics, the DLC could introduce missions that require players to strategize differently, utilizing Miles’ unique powers to combat the Beetle’s technological prowess. The addition of the Beetle as a main antagonist can lead to an engaging storyline, where Miles Morales must outsmart and outmaneuver a villain who relies on gadgets and tech, rather than brute strength or supernatural powers.

While Insomniac Games hasn’t officially confirmed DLC content for the game, many are hopeful for an eventual reveal. If the rumors prove true, this DLC could add significant depth to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, expanding the game’s universe and giving fans more of the thrilling action and narrative they have come to love, especially as they wait for Insomniac’s next lineup of games, which won’t be available to play until 2025.

It would be interesting to see Miles Morales act as a mentor figure of sorts to Cindy Moon, who is Silk in the comic books.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released on PlayStation 5 to rave reviews in late 2023. Although it didn’t win any awards at The Game Awards in December, it still set a new record for PlayStation. Unfortunately, its success came at a literal cost. This has forced Sony to reevaluate its financial investment in Insomniac despite the studio’s critical and commercial success in recent years.
