There’s a short list of first-party Sony studio games that hasn’t done wrong yet and Insomniac Games is on top. If it isn’t Sony’s most impactful acquisition ever, it’s close to it, especially after what it has shown in recent years. The studio has proven many times over that it can churn out hits in quick succession. So, while Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has barely been released, you can’t blame fans for looking into the future already. It doesn’t help that the developers are already talking about a potential Venom spin-off. But, if you ask Yuri Lowenthal, the voice and motion capture actor of Spider-Man and Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, there’s someone we haven’t seen yet that he’d like to appear in an eventual sequel.
In an interview with ComicBook.com ahead of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s launch, Lowenthal talked about the inclusion of one of Spider-Man’s best buddies in the comic books, Deadpool, saying:
I mean, there are so many ways they could go with a third game. I’m assuming, at this point nobody’s had me sign a contract for a third game, but I’m assuming there will be a third game.
Look, here’s something I’ve been pitching for a long time, and I don’t know if they’re going to do it, but I love the Spidey-Pool relationship. I love Deadpool and Spider-Man. As much as I talk about Moon Knight in this universe, and Bryan Intihar is tired of me talking about that, I’ve been hard-pitching, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if Nolan North and I got to play in that?’ And so I would love to see that. I’d love to see Deadpool and Spidey in this. Is it going to happen? Probably not. Do they listen to me? Mostly not. But that is a relationship I would love to see explored in games.
In the comic books, Spider-Man and Deadpool have had numerous encounters. Their interactions have ranged from the occasional friendly team-ups to contentious battles, often flavored with Deadpool’s particular brand of humor. One of the most noteworthy aspects of their relationship is their contrasting personalities. Spider-Man’s generally earnest and responsible nature clashes with Deadpool’s irreverence and unpredictability, resulting in entertaining and often comedic interactions. Their dynamic became so popular that Marvel even introduced a dedicated comic series, Spider-Man/Deadpool, in 2016.
Unfortunately, while both characters have seen successor in their respective film franchises, they haven’t been paired in a live-action setting yet nor in a video game.
This is where Insomniac comes in.
Deadpool already starred in a video game adaptation in 2013 with High Moon Studios’ Deadpool, an action-beat ’em up video game. It successfully captured Deadpool’s humor, fourth-wall breaks, and zany antics. Nolan North provided the voice for Deadpool in a narrative penned by longtime Deadpool comic writer Daniel Way. The story is full of jokes about video game clichés, and sees Deadpool on a mission to make the best video game ever starring himself. He’s also made appearances in other franchises, most recently in Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
With that said, a more featured role for Deadpool in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 could see the Merc with a Mouth start off as the opening antagonist. Norman Osborne could hire Wade Wilson to take Miles Morales’ Spider-Man out, forcing Peter Parker to hunt him down and save his protege. Then later, on, the trio could join forces against a much bigger threat. If you factor in Deadpool’s unpredictability and Peter Parker’s awkward humor, there could be numerous if hilarious plot twists, keeping fans engaged throughout.
Of course, this is all just speculation and Insomniac Games has yet to confirm if Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is indeed in the works. But, if we assume that Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 does happen, it will likely have to wait until Marvel’s Wolverine is done and possibly after the studio is done supporting Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 with post-launch content.
Speaking of Wolverine, the short-tempered and diminutive statured brutish mutant will join Deadpool in the upcoming MCU film, Deadpool 3. It’s possible that Deadpool’s video game version might not join Spider-Man but instead link up with his fellow Weapon X experiment in Marvel’s Wolverine, mirroring their cinematic counterparts.
