Things haven’t been going well over at Marvel Studios. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania recently had a poor showing at the box office and failed to meet the expectations of fans and critics. Now, adding to Marvel’s struggles, is the departure of a longtime executive from the studio.
Victoria Alonso joined Marvel in 2006 and served as the producer for the first Iron Man movie. Before her exit, Alonso had become the President of Physical, Post Production, VFX, and Animation, at Marvel.
The reason for the executive’s departure remains unclear, but she left Marvel last Friday, sources reveal. It’s speculated that Alonso’s resignation has something to do with Marvel’s issues with post-production and visual effects.
Alonso joined Marvel well before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was even a thing. During her seventeen-year stint, she was part of growing the studio into the highest-grossing franchise in film history.
Aside from being the head of visual effects and post-production, Alonso served as co-producer for early Marvel movies like Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Captain America: The First Avenger. She became an executive producer when The Avengers was released in 2021 and made $1.5 billion at the global box office. Since then, she’s become the executive producer for several more films and TV shows for Marvel Studios before her promotion to her current post.
Aside from her work at Marvel, Alonso also produced an Academy Award-nominated international feature in Argentina, 1985.
Marvel will have a huge void to fill with the exit of Alonso from the studio. Being the head of visual effects and post-production meant that she was in charge of the final product that audiences get to watch. The studio has reportedly been struggling with the post-production and visual effects work on its most recent projects leading to delays and poor critical reception.
Ant-Man 3’s middling reviews have partly been blamed on VFX problems. Three unnamed VFX employees for Marvel recently revealed that shortcuts were made during the post-production of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, leading to subpar visual effects. The report adds that Marvel allocated more manpower to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which had a negative impact on the quality of Ant-Man 3’s visuals.
The recent delay of The Marvels has also been attributed to extended post-production work. The movie has been pushed back by four months to give enough time to improve the quality of the upcoming film.
There are reports that major changes are underway at Marvel. The studio is apparently re-evaluating how it makes content and is focusing its efforts more on quality rather than quantity.
Marvel has also been delaying its current slate of TV shows for Disney+, with the latest being Secret Invasion.
