Just in time for Christmas, the Magic: Gathering Secret Lair x Doctor Who set drops for pre-order via the Wizards of the Coast store. Commemorating the Doctor Who 2023 holiday specials, the set features the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors.

Three Doctor Who 2023 holiday specials were streamed on Disney+ (co-produced by BBC Studios and Disney) celebrating the 60th anniversary of the legendary sci-fi TV show. The finale (The Giggle) also serves as the introduction to the new incarnation of the Doctor, as the Fourteenth Doctor (played by David Tennant) regenerated at the climax. Or, more accurately, the Doctor underwent bi-generation into two distinct versions of the character.

The newest Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair Drop Series set is based on these Doctor Who holiday specials. Officially named Doctor Who: Regeneration, it is the third of the Secret Lair x Doctor Who sets released this year.

The MTG Secret Lair x Doctor Who: Regeneration Drop set includes one of each of the following cards:

  • Rose Noble (depicting Yasmin Finney)
  • The Meep
  • The Celestial Toymaker (depicting Neil Patrick Harris)
  • The Fourteenth Doctor (depicting David Tennant)
  • The Fifteenth Doctor (depicting Ncuti Gatwa)

Interestingly, only the Rose Noble card includes a mechanic that was introduced in the main Doctor Who Universes Beyond MTG set released earlier in 2023. Furthermore, The Celestial Toymaker seems underpowered considering the level of cosmic reality manipulation he displayed in The Giggle episode. Meanwhile, the Meep can be a surprising bruiser if you have enough creatures to sacrifice.

The MTG x Doctor Who: Secret Lair features cards with the likenesses of the actors who played the characters, such as Rose Noble (Yasmin Finney).

The standout card in this drop looks like The Fourteenth Doctor, which for only 3 mana (UW and either R or G), is a 3/4 creature. That alone makes it cost-effective, but it also reveals the top 14 cards of the player’s library and place any Doctor cards in the graveyard. That seems like a disadvantage, but The Fourteenth Doctor can copy any Doctor card placed in the graveyard on the same turn it comes into play. Plus, The Fourteenth Doctor gains haste on that turn.

The Fifteenth Doctor card is less versatile, but has useful abilities that synergize with artifacts and non-creature spells. Being able to hunt for these types of spells and making the first nonartifact spell each turn cheaper to cast is great on these specialized deck builds.

In addition to the 5 cards, Magic: The Gathering customers who buy $200 or more products in a single order will get The Locust God promotional card. Note that this Locust God promotional extra applies to all Secret Lair purchases and not limited to the Doctor Who Universes Beyond.

The Doctor Who: Regeneration Secret Lair Drop is available in non-foil and foil variants. But Neil Patrick Harris looks a little more wrinkly as The Celestial Toymaker on the card art, though.

The Secret Lair x Doctor Who set is priced at U.S. $39.99 (U.S. 49.99 for the foil variants) and is available for pre-order until January 7, 2024. These will be shipped to customers starting on April 2, 2024.

Have you bought and played any of the Doctor Who Universes Beyond Magic: The Gathering cards? Would you like to see more franchises crossing over to the MTG card game and the digital Magic: The Gathering Arena? Are you looking forward to the Assassin’s Creed and Fallout Universes Beyond sets and Secret Lair Drop series coming in 2024?
