However, in a subsequent interview with VentureBeat, Boon revealed that the roster will feature characters from the arcade era all the way to the Deception, Deadly Alliance, Armageddon era, and possibly even the 9, X, and 11 era.

But, since this is a reboot, how is Mortal Kombat 1 going to accomplish that? It's easy: it will use the Kameo Fighter system.

Boon previously said the game's plot will determine who's part of the main roster and who isn't. In a later statement, Boon teased that Kameo characters might even include guest characters outside of the Mortal Kombat series. This implies that the main Mortal Kombat 1 roster is going to be composed exclusively of fighters relevant to the plot. Then, for fan service purposes, NetherRealm will use the Kameo Fighter system to bring in fan-favorite characters and open the game up for exciting crossovers as well as unexpected editions.

Under Ed Boon's direction, the Mortal Kombat franchise is taking bold steps in reimagining the gameplay and character dynamics. The inclusion of characters from across the series' history and the innovative Kameo fighters system showcases NetherRealm's commitment to evolving the franchise while still respecting its rich legacy.

However, despite the exciting additions, some characters won't be returning to the roster. The absence of Cyrax, Sektor, and Jade will undoubtedly disappoint some fans, as will the news that Skarlet's voice actress, Beata Pozniak, did not return for Mortal Kombat 1. The future may still hold a surprise, though, with the possibility of these characters returning in later DLCs.

Mortal Kombat 1 also isn't going to feature Cole Young, although we're not sure if this is disappointing news or a blessing.

In any case, as the September release date approaches, fan anticipation for Mortal Kombat 1 is reaching a hellish peak.
