Do you like patches? Because Larian just released a patch for your patch so you can patch while you patch. In response to the challenges introduced by Patch 6, Larian Studios has swiftly released Hotfix #18 for their award-winning computer roleplaying game (CRPG) Baldur’s Gate 3.

The hotfix mainly addresses issues with vendor display and bartering crashes. It came less than a week after the release of Patch 6 on February 16. Despite the initial excitement for the major update, players were dismayed by the emergence of various bugs that disrupted their Baldur’s Gate 3 gaming experiences.

While Patch 6 has earned praise for its innovative kiss animations, because of course, and quality-of-life enhancements such as the ability to switch party members seamlessly within the player’s camp, it also brought forth a slew of issues.

With Hotfix #18, Larian Studios reiterated their commitment to addressing other reported issues stemming from BG3’s Patch #6. This proactive stance from the developers is a positive indicator that the problems introduced by the recent update might be resolved soon.

Patch #6 updated Baldur's Gate 3 with graphics and gameplay improvements, including better kissing animations. However, reports of crashes when interacting with vendors led to the release of Hotfix #18 within the same week.

One thing that needs to be pointed out is that Larian Studios advised players experiencing issues to consider uninstalling any BG3 mods, suggesting a potential source of the problems. While the exact timeline for the next big patch remains unspecified, the studio’s track record indicates that fans may need to exercise patience.

However, the hotfix releases typically occurr on a weekly basis, so Hotfix #19 will likely be coming soon. The persistence of bugs from Patch 6 underscores the complexity of the issues at hand, but Larian Studios appears dedicated to the ongoing refinement of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Mods have become a staple of the gaming industry, and CRPGs in particular. The global community of modders regularly adds new features to new and old games, providing variety and longevity. However, mods for more recent games like Baldur’s Gate 3 can also cause problems due to incompatibility with the updates and patches. So it can be a double-edged sword at times.

Baldur's Gate 3 players who use mods are advised by Larian Studios to reinstall the game if the Hotfix #18 doesn't work. Some mods are incompatible with the Hotfixes.

One other concern with Hotfix #18 is that macOS users will have to wait a little longer, as Larian Studios stated in Patch #6:

We know Mac players will be keen to get hands-on with the latest fixes and improvements, but we’ll have to ask that you sit tight for a little longer while we continue to work on bringing future updates to Mac alongside PC versions. We truly appreciate your patience and are sorry for the inconvenience. We’ll keep you updated with our progress, so make sure you’re following us on Twitter and Facebook to see when Patch 6 will drop for you!

The timing of the technical issues comes right after Larian Studios notched another slew of awards. Baldur’s Gate 3 secured five accolades at the AIAS’ DICE Awards, including another Game of the Year title. Beyond that, the officially licensed Dungeons & Dragons CRPG has received over half a million reviews with overwhelmingly positive ratings of 96% on the Steam platform.

Clearly, Baldur’s Gate 3 is continuing to thrive despite the technical issues Larian Studios has had to deal with. Have you encountered any of the reported issues, or has your Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay been smooth? What other features for BG3 are you looking forward to seeing from Larian Studios in 2024?
