The DC Extended Universe has officially concluded with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and its off kilter end credits scene. Now that DC Studios can focus its full attention on the new DC Universe, James Gunn gives promising updates about its first projects; mainly the hotly anticipated Superman: Legacy.
The DC Studios co-CEO recently took to the social media platform Threads to share with fans the newest developments for upcoming DCU projects. In one of the threads, a fan asked Gunn about a production update for Superman: Legacy which he will be directing.
Gunn revealed that pre-production is going well and shared that most of the work is underway. “It’s going swimmingly,” Gunn wrote. “Sets being built, costumes being finished, actors studying roles, prosthetics and VFX models being made, flights booked. Here we go.”

Superman: Legacy already has its main cast in David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. DC Studios also recently signed Nicholas Hoult to the project as Lex Luthor. Gunn also shared that casting for the movie is almost done with more than 90% of the actors already “locked in.”
The former MCU director was also asked for updates regarding the costumes and concept art for the upcoming movie. Gunn revealed that the new costumes for Superman and the rest of the heroes, along with the concept art, will be ready by the time the cameras start rolling.
“By the time we shoot,” Gunn replies to questions about when the costumes will be finished.
Superman: Legacy will be a retelling of Superman’s time as a young journalist in Metropolis. According to DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, Clark Kent is trying to balance his Kryptonian origins with his human upbringing in Smallville, Kansas. He brings along a sense of justice and kindness that has been outdated.
“It’s not an origin story,” Safran shared last year. “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He has kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.”
Gunn is personally writing and directing Superman: Legacy which serves as the first movie for the new DC Universe. The new roadmap for DCU revealed last year starts with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which resets the whole cinematic universe and introduces new characters.
Aside from the Superman project, DC Studios is also working on movies like Batman’s The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing.
